I believe psychotherapy should focus on growth and positive change. My priority is creating an environment of trust and safety. Depending on your needs, we’ll address the process in the following ways:
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Psychodynamic psychotherapy will help you understand and transform what's underneath emotional pain and dissatisfaction with life. This approach embraces the belief that difficulties in life are created outside of conscious awareness. My work is informed by training in theories that stress interaction. I believe in the primacy and healing power of the therapeutic relationship. Our connection will help you become aware of patterns of responding to the world that no longer work. Through your awareness and the emotions that are felt in the process, you will gain the freedom you need to make healthier and more adaptive choices. As a relational psychotherapist I believe that nurturing relationships create emotional well-being. At its core, relational psychotherapy explores how past and present relational patterns have brought about distress, low self-esteem, and self-defeating behaviors. Working in an affirming and collaborative atmosphere, you will experience a vitalizing, esteem-building relationship with me. Included in this approach is a serious consideration of the impact of social issues such as race, class, culture, gender, and sexual orientation, and how they are present in your life and in the therapy relationship. Cognitive-Behavioral Techniques Cognitive-behavioral therapy is an approach that emphasizes the idea that our thoughts influence our feelings and behaviors. As such, if we can change our thinking we can feel better and avoid unhealthy behaviors. I'll weave cognitive-behavioral techniques and active problem solving into our work so that you can start feeling better right away. Solving current problems gives you the freedom to work through the roots of your distress. Substance Use Counseling and Harm Reduction Substance use counseling and harm reduction psychotherapy help people who are experiencing problems with substance use, abuse, or dependence. The emphasis is on the discrepancy between where you're at with your using and where you want to be. If you're not happy with where you're at, we'll figure out what changes you want to make and how to implement them. If no change is desired, I'll help you reduce the potential harm caused by substance use. Substance use counseling and harm reduction psychotherapy emphasize health and wellness and may include educational, cognitive-behavioral, and psychodynamic components. Addiction Recovery Therapy Addiction recovery therapy helps people who are in the process of recovery from substance dependence or other behavior-based addictions, such as, out of control sexual behavior, compulsive debting, gambling, codependency, hoarding, etc. Addiction recovery therapy is a powerful adjunct to community-based 12-step programs. As an addiction recovery specialist I understand the dynamics and principles of the steps, traditions, and concepts of groups such as AA, NA, CA, CMA, SCA, DA, OA, and GA. I can help you get the most out of your recovery so you can live “happy, joyous and free.” |
